Re-imagined

Mathilde was a pretty lady. She was married to a poor clerk. She always longed for a more luxurious life. She avoided visiting her rich friends because it invariably led her to feel low and miserable about her own life.

One evening, her husband returned from work with an invitation to a much-desired party for Mathilde. At first, Mathilde was being dramatic by saying that he should give away the invitation to somebody else because she has nothing to wear to the party. Her husband gave money for her dress from the savings he had made for his trip. Now she wanted a good piece of jewelry to go with the dress. So she decided to borrow a diamond necklace from an old friend, Madame Frostier. She had a very good time at the party and while coming back she didn’t feel like parting with the necklace. So she decided to keep the necklace for a little longer and give an excuse to Madame Frostier. For the next few days, Mathilde kept thinking about the necklace. Then an evil plan hatched in her head. She and her husband would sell this diamond necklace and give a replica to Madame Frostier. Then they made plans about how they would use that money. They dreamt about moving to a new town, with a mansion to live in, and all kinds of luxuries. They put their house on sale and her husband left his menial job. Finally, the day came when they were to sell the diamond necklace and buy the replica. When they showed the diamond necklace to the jeweler, he told them that the necklace was a replica.
